Course Objective: The purpose of this course is to learn, practice, and become
comfortable with the mathematics that will be used in future courses and in
everyday life. The mathematical
framework set up by this course will serve as a basis for the mathematics
encountered in business and/or economic classes, various science classes, and
further math courses. The
mathematical topics covered will include functions, exponents, logarithms, and
trigonometric functions.
Textbook: Pre-Calculus, by David Cohen, is available at the
bookstore. Be forewarned that the
less expensive paperback version may fall apart during the course of the
semester. The “used” versions in
the bookstore will be even more likely to do so. Invest in some packing tape or duct tape.
Course Website: The
departmental website for all sections of Pre-Calculus is http://www.math.uga.edu/1113/1113home.htm. Any departmental information on this
course will be posted there. Any
information bearing on this section will be given in class and posted on the
instructor’s website, http://www.math.uga.edu/~fletcher/PreCalc2.htm,
or will be emailed to the students’ UGA accounts.
Software Package: The JExam program can be found on all EITS computers (labs

Grading:
Grades for the course will be given according to the following
percentages:

Cheating: The
instructor will adhere to all aspects of the university academic honesty
policy, as will each student. The
policy may be found at www.uga.edu/ovpi/academic_honesty/culture_honesty.htm. Although students are encouraged to
work together and help each other on “in class homework,” the final product
must be the student’s own work, written up by him/her.
Attendance: As
in any mathematics course, it is important that the student participate in
classes. Therefore, attendance is
mandatory, and will be taken in each class. More than three unexcused absences may be grounds for
withdrawal from the course with a grade of W or WF, with an automatic WF for
students withdrawing after the midpoint of the semester. Extenuating circumstances may arise,
but should be brought to the attention of the instructor beforehand, if
possible. Please note that a
time-stamped excuse from the
Contract: This
syllabus stands as a contract between the instructor and the student. By distributing this syllabus, the
instructor agrees to abide by it.
By reading this syllabus, the student agrees to abide by it. At some point in the semester,
circumstances may require slight changes to the syllabus. If this occurs, all students will be
notified in class.
