MATH 1113 Homepage: http://www.math.uga.edu/1113/1113home.htm Course Description: This course is not intended to be a terminal mathematics course; it prepares students for the mainstream calculus courses. Exemption of or credit for MATH 1113 is required of students in the Business School and science majors in A&S. Topics covered include identities, graphs, and word problems involving exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. Grading Policy: There will be a skills test, six main tests and a final for this class. I will also be giving announced quizzes on a regular basis. Note that YOU CANNOT MAKE UP an announced quiz. Tests are taken electronically in rooms 308 and 324 outside of class time. More information will be given on this matter as we get closer to the first test. The grading scale will break down as follows: Skills Test 05% Tests 1 – 6 60% (10% each) Homework 05% Quizzes 05% Class Participation 05% Final 20% Total 100% As usual, a cumulative grade of 90-100 is an A, 80-89 is a B, 70-79 is a C, 60- 69 is a D, and 0-59 is an F. Tests: Scratch paper is provided by the lab. No personal calculators, except the TI-30 are allowed in the lab. All personal belongings except for a pen or pencil are to be placed in the bins provided in the lab. You must turn in your scratch paper at the end of the test. When you have finished your test, your score will be shown on your computer screen. Any questions concerning the test should be resolved with me. Important Dates: A semester calendar has been appended with important dates, including test dates and semester holidays. Attendance: It is your responsibility to attend this class regularly and to attempt the assigned homework problems. However, I will not be taking formal attendance for the class after the first two weeks. Note, however, that you cannot make up the announced quizzes, so attendance is required for that day if you want proper credit for that quiz. Note also the fact that I give a class participation grade. Obviously, you cannot participate if you aren’t present. Classroom Etiquette: Students must arrive to class on time and should stay until class is dismissed. Cell phones, etc. should be turned off (or on silent mode). If you must take a call, step outside in a mannerly fashion to do so. Academic Honesty: All students are responsible for maintaining the highest standards of honesty and integrity in every phase of their academic careers. The penalties for academic dishonesty are severe and ignorance is not an acceptable defense. Students should pay particular attention to sections 5 and 7 of the academic honesty statement at http://www.uga.edu/ovpi/academic_honesty/culture_honesty.htm Note that this syllabus is subject to change as I deem necessary.
