Syllabus

  • There is no official text for the course.   We will,  however,  make use of the classic text  Elements,  by Euclid.  It holds up well after all these centuries.
  • The software Geometer's Sketchpad,  version 4, is required.   The student edition of  Geometer's Sketchpad  can be ordered online or by phone directly from Key Curriculum Press for $39.95.
Here's an outline of topics:
  • Geometer's Sketchpad
  • Axioms and proofs in geometry
  • Trigonometry and analytic geometry
We'll start by getting familiar with Geometer's Sketchpad, which we'll use throughout the course. Then we'll discuss the foundations of geometry, first from an axiomatic viewpoint, and then using analytic methods (trig functions and algebraic equations).

This  year  MATH 5200/7200 will again be paired  with Dr. Nicholas Oppong's EMAT 4680. This means that the two courses will be coordinated so that students who are taking both of them will see many of the same topics from two sides at once.

Computer Labs

The Office of Instructional Technology (OIT) computer lab in Aderhold 227 also has Geometer's Sketchpad installed. To find out when this lab is free, go to OIT labs. Students may use the lab any time when it is not reserved for a class.

Geometer's Sketchpad (version 3) has been installed on the campus Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) computer network. For lab locations and schedules, go to EITS labs.
