Spring 2008
MATH 2410(H) HOMEPAGE
Ted Shifrin

MATH 2410(H), CALCULUS WITH THEORY, meets MWF 11:15-12:05, R 11:00-12:15

MATH 2400(H)-2410(H) will follow Mike Spivak's wonderful text Calculus; this is a truly "mathematical" treatment of calculus. Mike is writing a new, fourth edition of the text and we will be his guinea pigs. Even though most students will have had AP calculus (and may keep their AP credit for MATH 2250), no prior knowledge of calculus is assumed, but proofs and a deep understanding of the underlying concepts will be stressed. Any student who is interested in a highly demanding and interactive mathematics experience is welcome; membership in the Honors program is not required.

This class continues in the fall as MATH 3500(H)-3510(H) (Multivariable Mathematics, an integrated, rigorous course in linear algebra and multivariable calculus).

There will be daily homework, some of which will be collected and graded approximately once a week. There will be five hour-exams (scheduled on Thursdays with the full 75-minute period allowed) and a 3-hour final exam on Friday, May 2, 2008, at 12-3 pm. Attendance is expected, as is serious class participation.

Puzzler Problems: Solve as many of these as you can (or want to!).
