Week 1:
Thursday, January 8: first day of class
Due Tuesday, January 13: 1) Write an e-mail about the following
a) the most significant things you learned in class on Thursday and
b) the questions you have about Thursday’s material.
Send your e-mail to sybilla at math dot uga dot edu and to matthews at math
dot uga dot edu
2) Read the information about MATH 5030 on the course website.
You are responsible for knowing the policies and expectations of the course,
including the way I will determine your course participation score and your
letter grade.
3) Read section 7.1.
MATH 7030 students only: begin to brainstorm ideas for your project.
Due Thursday, January 15: Do the exercises for section 7.1. Hand in: Make up and solve a problem or activity for middle grades students that is related to one or more of the exercises.
Week 2:
Due Tuesday, January 20: Read section 7.2 to page 22. Do exercises 1 - 6 on page 25. Hand in: problem 3 a, b, c, on pages 35, 36. For b, determine whether point A or point E will receive more sunlight during a full day. Also hand in problem 5 on page 38. Also hand in: Determine if the linked NASA photo shows a sunrise or a sunset at the locations where the light and dark regions meet. Explain your reasoning.
Due Thursday, January 22: Read the rest of section 7.2 and do the rest of the excercises. Hand in: problem 6 on pages 38, 39. Also hand in: 1) Use a protractor and ruler to draw a map that shows the following route leading to buried treasure: Starting at the old tree, walk 10 paces heading straight for the tallest mountain in the distance. Turn clockwise, 90 degrees. Walk 20 paces. Turn counterclockwise 120 degrees. Walk 40 paces. Turn clockwise, 60 degrees. Walk 20 paces. This is the spot where the treasure is buried. (No explanation needed.)
