Week 5: Monday 9/19office hour moved to 1:20 - 2:20 pm. Tuesday 9/20 office hour moved to 11 am.
Due Monday, September 19: Hand in: problems 6, 10, and 30 on pages 606, 607. Begin to think about your field assignment, which will be due on December 2.
Due Wednesday, September 21: Hand in: problem 2 on page 606, discussing the logic of the solution process in detail. Also hand in:Write a story problem that fits with the strip diagram. Solve your problem in two ways: with the aid of the strip diagram and with equations.
Due Friday, September 23: To be handed in on Monday: Solve each of the equations below in two ways 1) by writing a statement about distance that corresponds to the equation and then using a rough drawing of a number line as an aid, and 2) by replacing the equation with two equations and separately solving these two equations; explain why you can replace the original equation with the two equations. The equations:
Week 6:
Due Monday, September 26: Hand in the problems on absolute value from Friday (9/23) but use only method 1 to solve the equations (for now).
Due Wednesday, September 28: Read section 13.3 and do the practice problems. Study for the test on Friday. Bring questions to class (and to office hours). We will spend some class time going over your questions.
Due Friday, September 30: TEST The test covers section 7.6, additional material from handouts and class discussions on ratio and proportion, and material from section 14.1 (using samples, including "capture-recapture", activity 14D), sections 13.1 , 13.2, and solving equations involving absolute value (handout). I removed section 13.3 from this test -- this material will be on the next test.
