Week 1:
Monday, January 10: first day of class
Due Wednesday, January 12:
- Read the information about MATH 5003 on the course
website. You are responsible for knowing the policies and expectations
of the course, including the way I will determine your course participation
score and your letter grade.
- Read section 14.1 and do the practice problems. Check the answers to the
practice problems.
- Hand in problem 6 on page 651. Explain the solution in two different ways.
At least one of those ways should use a method that an elementary school student
might be able to discover or understand. Remember to explain your answers
in such a way as to teach someone. Recall the grading criteria:
- The work is factually correct, or nearly so, with only minor, inconsequential
flaws.
- The work addresses the specific question or problem that was posed.
It is focused, detailed, and precise. Key points are emphasized. There
are no irrelevant or distracting points.
- The work could be used to teach a student: either a child or another
college student, whichever is most appropriate.
- The work is clear, convincing, and logical. An explanation should be
convincing to a skeptic and should not require the reader to make a leap
of faith.
- Clear, complete sentences are used. Mathematical terms and symbols are
used correctly. If applicable, supporting pictures, diagrams, and/or equations
are used appropriately and as needed.
- The work is coherent.
MATH 7003 students only: begin
to brainstorm ideas for your project.
Week 2:
Monday, January 17: MLK holiday, no class
Due Wednesday, January 19: As discussed in class, you may
hand in problem 6 on page 651 today (instead of last Wednesday). Read Section
14.2 and do the practice problems. Check the answers to the practice problems.
Hand in: problems 2 and 4on pages 662 - 663. The website listed in the problems
does not currently work. Instead, please use http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/tables/Ltt1999/
for problem 4. (Webistes of relevance to the book can be found at http://www.math.uga.edu/~sybilla/Book/booklinks.htm
