Week 3:

Monday, September 4: holiday

Due Wednesday, September 6: Read section 13.2 from the bottom of page 598 to page 602 and do the practice problems. Do, but don't hand in: problems 19 - 21 on page 314 and problems 6 - 11 on pages 606, 607. Hand in: Problems 23, 24 on page 314 and problems 12, 13 on page 607.

Due Friday, September 8: Read section 13.1 and do the practice problems. Hand in: (a) Write a story problem for the equation (4/5)x = 3/4. (b) Explain how to solve the problem using a strip diagram that shows the 4/5. (c) To solve the problem algebraically, we can divide 3/4 by 4/5, which we do by multiplying 3/4 by 5/4 (the reciprocal of 4/5). Use the strip diagram to justify this "multiplying by the reciprocal" process.

Week 4:

Due Monday, September 11: MATH 7035 students only: proposals are due for your project. Do, but don't hand in: problems 6 - 18 on pages 593, 594.

Due Wednesday, September 13: TEST on the material we have covered so far, from section 7.6 (revised) and sections 13.1, 13.2. Expect test problems that are similar to assigned problems (including "don't hand in" ones) and class activities/problems done in class, except for material on the consumer price index.

Due Friday, September 15: Begin to think about your field assignment, which will be due on December 1.
