Week 7:

Due Monday, October 2: Read section 13.6 and do the practice problems.

Due Wednesday, October 4: Do but don't hand in: problems 3 - 7 on pages 645, 646. Hand in: problems 3 and 4 on page 469, 470 of the activity manual (you may either hand in the page from the activity manual or write your solutions on a separate page), problem 10 on page 639 of the text, and problem 11 on page 646.

Due Friday, October 6: Repeat QUIZ on sequences and series. I will average your two scores (this quiz and the last) as follows: the higher score will count 70%, the lower score 30%.

Week 8:

Due Monday, October 9:

Due Wednesday, October 11: Hand in:

1) Given a line in a coordinate plane explain how to derive the y = mx + b equation for the line by using facts about angles formed when parallel lines are cut by a transversal and facts about similar triangles. Essentially, this should be a clear and complete write-up of the "Geometry and Equations of Lines" activity we did in class on Wednesday 10/4.

2) Give a story situation in which quantities in the situation are "naturally" related by an equation of the form y-b = m(x-a), where a, b, m are non-zero constants of your choice. Give a story situation in which quantities in the situation are "naturally" related by an equation of the form ax+by=c, where a, b, c are non-zero constants of your choice. Of course, use different types of situations that we did in class.

3) The attached problem on simplifying algebraic expressions.

Due Friday, October 13: Read the handout on solving simultaneous linear equations that was copied from the Singapore textbook. Be able to solve all the problems.
