Week 9:
Due Monday, March 6: Read section 13.3 and do the practice problems. Hand in: 1) (a) Write an "add to" story problem that can be solved by subtracting numbers in the problem. Show how a child could use a strip diagram to see why the problem can be solved by subtracting. (b) Write a "take away" story problem that can be solved by adding numbers in the problem. Show how a child could use a strip diagram to see why the problem can be solved by adding. (These problems tend to be harder for children.) Also hand in: problems 1, 6, and 16 on pages 616 - 617.
Due Wednesday, March 8: Read section 13.5 and do the practice problems.
Spring break: March 13 - 17
Week 10:
Due Monday, March 20: Hand in: problem 19 on page 619, and: Write a story that might be interesting to 4th or 5th graders and that gives rise to a function. Say clearly what the function is that your story gives rise to (be sure to say what the inputs and outputs are) and draw the graph of the function. Explain how features of the graph of the function are related to things that happen in the story. Also hand in: problems 8 and 10 on page 639.
Due Wednesday, March 22: QUIZ on sections 13.2, 13.3, and 13.5, and on addition and subtraction story problems.
