Thursday, August 16: first day of class
Week 1:
Due Tuesday, August 21: Read about all the course policies, including the grading scale and policy. Read sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 to page 35. Do the practice problems for section 2.2 and practice problems 1 - 4 in section 2.3 and check the answers.Do but don't hand in: problem 5 on page 30 (you may want to use some results from this in problem 6), and problems 1 - 5 on page 46. Hand in: problems 6, 7 on pages 30, 31, and problem 16 on page 48. Briefly discuss and explain your choices in problem 16.
Due Thursday, August 23: Read the rest of section 2.3 and do the rest of the practice problems in that section (and check your answers). Also read sections 2.4 and 2.5 and do the practice problems in those sections. Hand in on WebCT: (Go to WebCT MATH5020 Fall 07 and click on "Assignments") 1)Write a paragraph discussing some aspect of numbers on number lines that you think might be difficult for middle grades students. Say why you think it is difficult and what you think might help.2) Read activity 2G on page 19, 20 about misconceptions in comparing decimal numbers and do problem 1 on page 20. Hand in your answer to this problem on WebCT (since I did not make this clear I have extended the due date to August 24 at 5 pm). No explanations are needed for this problem.

Week 2:
Due Tuesday, August 28: Read the chapter 2 summary and study items at the end of the chapter. Read section 3.1 and do the practice problems (check your answers too). Do but don't hand in: problems 2, 14, 16, 19, 20 on page 57, 58 and problem 4 on page 62. Hand in: problems 4, 5 on page 57, problem 3 on page 62.
Due Thursday, September 30: Read section 3.2 and do the practice problems (check your answers). Hand in on WebCT: Read class activities 2H and 2I on pages 21, 22 of the activity manual (if possible, get someone to play the games with you!). Then write your answer to problem 3 of Activity 2H and problem 3 of Activity 2I on WebCT.
