Week 5:

Due Tuesday, September 18: Hand in: (typed OR neatly written 2nd or later draft): Problems 11, 13 on page 593. Be sure to define your variables in problem 13. Also hand in: (1) Draw, label, and shade a rectangle and use it to explain why (x+2)(x+3) = x^2 + 5x + 6 is true for all counting numbers x. Why is the equation true for all real numbers x? (2) Hand in on WebCT: Using the equations that arose in this homework set, describe and discuss some of the different purposes for which we use equations.

Due Thursday, September 20: Read the rest of section 13.2 and do the remaining practice problems.

Week 6:

Due Tuesday, September 25: TEST on section 7.5 (decimal division), section 7.6 (ratio and proportion) and also inverse proportion, section 13.1 (expressions and equations), and section 13.2 (solving equations).

Due Thursday, September 27: Read section 13.3 and do the practice problems.
