Due Tuesday, October 2 : Hand in: (typed OR neatly written 2nd or later draft): Problem 1, problem 3 part b only on pages 616, 617 and problem 14a on page 618 and: give a formula for the sum of the arithmetic series 1+2+3+4+...+N and explain why this formula is valid. Extra credit: (hand in separately) Explain why Ashley's method for squaring a number ending in 5 must always work.

Due Thursday, October 4 : Read section 13.4 and do the practice problems.

Week 8:

Due Tuesday, October 9 : Read section 13.5 and do the practice problems. Hand in: (typed OR neatly written 2nd or later draft): 1) The Raja gives Rani 1 grain of rice on the first day, 2 grains of rice on the second day, 4 grains of rice on the third day, and so on, each day the Raja gives Rani double the number of grains of rice he gave her the day before for a total of 30 days. After 30 days, how many grains of rice will Rani have in all? Solve this problem without adding all 30 numbers and explain your method (if you apply a formula, explain in detail how to derive this formula). Also hand in: Problem 7 (do not just apply a formula) and problem 10a on page 626. For 10a, explain clearly why your series stands for the amount of money in the account.
