Week 15:

Due Tuesday, April 24: Do but don't hand in: problems 1 - 3 and 5 on page 546. Hand in: problems 10, 14 on pages 541, 542 ("slanted portion of the cone" means the part of the cone other than the base) and problem 4 on page 546, and also hand in: (*) Write an outline of the reasoning Archimedes used to determine the volume of a sphere of radius r. Your outline does not have to give all the details but it should describe how Archimedes related the volume of the sphere to the volumes of other shapes. You may describe the method in terms of play doh if you like. Math 7030 students: projects due

Read the rest of section 11.9 and do the remaining practice problems. Do but don't hand in: (1) Explain the "scaling proof" of the Pythagorean theorem that we discussed in class.
