Week 3:
Due Tuesday, January 23: Do practice problems 3, 4, 5 of section 8.4 on page 3553 (and check answers). Read the worked examples on page 247 of the 7th grade Singapore text handed out in class. Do, but don't hand in, all the rest of problem 8 on page 250 of the Singapore handout (turn in 8c, 8h). Hand in: Problems 8c, 8h on page 250 and problem 12 b on page 275 of the 7th grade Singapore text handout. Use reasoning about angles to explain why your answers are valid (here, measuring with a protractor doesn't count as reasoning). Matching arrows on lines indicate that the lines are parallel. Also hand in: problems 7 and 8 on page 356. For problem 8, describe the angles in the smaller triangles in terms of the angles a and b of the larger triangle.
Due Thursday, January 25: Read sections 8.3. 8.4 and 9.3 and do the practice problems in those sections. (We will be returning to finish the rest of section 8.2 later.)
Week 4:
Due Tuesday, January 30: Read the rest of section 8.2 and do the remaining practice problems. Hand in: problem 3 on page 350, problem 4 on page 356, and problem 1 a, b on page 412. Also hand in: Use a compass to draw part of a design like the one on page 237 of the activity manual and then use your design to draw a regular hexagon (regular means that all sides are the same length and all angles are the same). Then draw another larger design and use it to draw a regular 12-gon (12-sided, all sides the same length, all angles the same). No explanations needed. Also hand in: problem 3 on page 413.
Due Thursday, February 1: QUIZ The quiz covers sections 8.1, 8.2 (not including reflections in mirrors), 8.3, 8.4, 9.3 and additional material discussed in class, including Singapore angle problems and additional criteria for triangle congruence. Quiz problems will be similar to problems done in class, assigned practice problems, and "hand in" homework problems that have been graded. Math 7030 students only: project proposals due (a brief description of what you plan to do).
