Week 1:

Tuesday, August 19: first day of class

Due Thursday, August 21: 1) Write an e-mail about the following
a) the most significant things you learned in class on Tuesday and
b) the questions you have about Tuesday’s material.
Send your e-mail to sybilla at math dot uga dot edu and to matthews at math dot uga dot edu
2) Read the information about MATH 5020 on the course website. You are responsible for knowing the policies and expectations of the course, including the attendance policies and the grading policies.
3) Read sections 2.1 and 2.2.

MATH 7020 students only: begin to brainstorm ideas for your project.

Week 2:

Due Tuesday, August 26: 1) Check out the website: http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/java/scienceopticsu/powersof10/index.html for a really cool experience of "zooming in through powers of 10".

2) Read sections 2.3 and 2.8. Do (but don't hand in) the exercises of sections 2.2, 2.3, and 2.8 (pages 41 - 43, 58, 59, and 112, 113 of the text) and read the answers to these exercises after you have solved them yourself. A section of answers to exercises immediately follows each section of exercises.

3) Hand in problems 1 and 2 on page 44 of the text.

Due Thursday, August 28: 1) Read sections 2.4 and 2.5 and do the exercises at the end of these sections. Check your answers in the answer sections. 2) Hand in problem 3 on page 86 of the text.
