Tuesday, September 30: Test. The test will consist of problems similar to the following problems:

• chapter 2 problems,
• chapter 3 problems problems 7 - 27 only;
• section 4.1 - 4.8 problems problems 1 - 42 only.

Thursday, October 2:

Week 8:

Due Tuesday, October 7: Read section 4.7 and do the exercises. Hand in problems 1 and 4 on pages 267, 268.

Due Thursday, October 11: (midterm) Read the article "Introducing Percents in Linear Measurement to Foster an Understanding of Rational-Number Operations" by Joan Moss in Teaching Children Mathematics, volume 9, number 6, February 2003, handed out in class. Hand in: 1) Write a 1 or 2 paragraph summary of the article. 2) Discuss exercise 6 d on page 259, 260 as follows: i) In your own words, describe the solution strategy presented in the exercise and explain why it makes sense. ii) Analyze the equations in the answer to 6 d on page 264 and explain how each step relates to the solution strategy as it was described in words.
