ALEKS Placement

ALEKS Placement Exam

Cost: $25.00

SCORING

A score of 76 or higher will give you PLACEMENT into Calculus (Math 2250). Those scoring below 76 should register for Math 1113.

*IMPORTANT PLACEMENT INFORMATION*

A Precalculus (Math 1113) exemption is NOT PLACED ON YOUR RECORD using the ALEKS exam. Once you have successfully completed Calculus, the ALEKS exam will give you a WAIVER of your Core I mathematics requirement, and Calculus can be applied to Core Area III.

If you are in need of only a Precalculus exemption for your chosen major and don't plan on taking Calculus, you MUST take the DMAT.

ALEKS also does not automatically satisfy MATH 1113 prerequisites for courses in other departments, so students who need a MATH 1113 exemption for a course such as CSCI 1301 or CSCI 2610 should take the DMAT.

GENERAL INFORMATION

What is ALEKS?

ALEKS is a powerful artificial-intelligence based assessment tool that zeros in on the strengths and weaknesses of a student’s mathematical knowledge, reports its findings to the student, and then provides the student with a learning environment for improving this knowledge to an appropriate level for course course exemption.

Can I transfer an ALEKS Placement score from completion at another institution?

No, the University of Georgia does not transfer ALEKS Placement scores from other institutions. You will need to retake the ALEKS placement test when you transfer to the University of Georgia.

When do students take ALEKS Placement?

Most students choose to take the exam prior to orientation and the first day of registration.

How long will it take?

The ALEKS Placement Assessment takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.  After the assessment, an individualized Preparation and Learning Module is available for you to review and learn material, and to improve placement and eventual course outcomes.

All students are strongly encouraged to spend several hours using the ALEKS Preparation and Learning Module.  Even if you have achieved placement in MATH 2250, time spent in ALEKS will better prepare you with a firm command of the basics.

Can I retake the ALEKS Placement Assessment?

Yes, you may take up to 5 placement assessments. However, to make each attempt worthwhile, it is important that you spend time working in your ALEKS Prep and Learning Module in between placement assessments so that you can improve your skills.

Can I retake the ALEKS Placement Assessment immediately?

You must wait 48 hours between placement assessments. There is generally no benefit to re-taking the assessment immediately after completing a prior attempt. You are unlikely to improve your results by simply re-taking the assessment without spending time in the Prep and Learning Module to refresh material that you may have forgotten or to learn new material.

Does progress in an ALEKS Prep and Learning Module count toward placement?

No. You must complete a new Placement Assessment to change your placement result.  Select the placement tab in the upper right corner of the ALEKS page to start a new Placement Assessment.

What is the cost?

The ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning Program costs $25 which you will be asked to submit on your first login.  This will give you access to 5 tries on the placement exam as well as six months of access to the Preparation and Learning Modules, allowing you to brush up on your basic Pre-Calculus skills while you study Calculus.

Topics covered:

  • Real numbers (including fractions, integers, and percentages)
  • Equations and inequalities (including linear equations, linear inequalities, systems of linear equations, and quadratic equations),
  • Linear and quadratic functions (including graphs and functions, linear functions, and parabolas), exponents and polynomials (including integer exponents, polynomial arithmetic, factoring, and polynomial equations), rational expressions (including rational equations and rational functions
  • Radical expressions (including higher roots and rational exponents)
  • Exponentials and logarithms (including function compositions and inverse functions, properties of logarithms, and logarithmic equations)
  • Geometry and trigonometry (including perimeter, area, and volume, coordinate geometry, trigonometric functions, and identities and equations).

What to expect

This is a free response assessment; there are no multiple choice questions. Before you take the assessment, ALEKS will present a short tutorial on how to enter answers, how to use the graphing utilities, and how to use the built in calculator that will be offered when appropriate.

**Exam scores are manually pulled every morning (Monday-Friday), please allow at least 24 hours for your exam score to be processed. Once your score has been processed, you will be allowed to register for any section of Calculus (MATH 2250) with open seats available

What you need

Your UGA Myid (e.g. xyz5000) and password.
A pencil and paper.
A reliable internet connection.
2-3 hours of time.
A space conducive to doing your best work.

You should NOT use your own calculator. If one is needed to answer a question, ALEKS will provide one automatically for that question.

You should NOT use other resources such as textbooks, websites, or friends. Use of non-permitted resources may result in you being required to take a course for which you are not prepared.
