McCay Award Guidelines

In honor of Charles F. McCay, Professor of Mathematics at The University of Georgia from 1833-1853, President of the University of South Carolina, and pioneer in the insurance industry, the McCay Faculty Award will recognize University of Georgia Mathematics faculty for combined achievement in teaching, research, and service to the Department or University. It will consist of a fixed salary supplement of $5,000 each academic year for four years, together with the associated fringe benefits, using income from the McCay Endowment Fund.

Those eligible for the McCay Award are tenured members of the UGA Mathematics Department, apart from the Department Head, faculty members holding honorary professorships (such as Meigs, Beaver, University, or Regents Professorships, Research Professorships, or the Barrow Professorship), and current holders of the Award whose terms are not expiring.

The first McCay Award will be made in Fiscal 1998, and succeeding ones at two year intervals after that. There is no expectation that a McCay Award will be renewed after the four years for which it is given. However, at the expiration of their terms, holders of the Award may be considered for reappointment on the same basis as other faculty members.

Recipients of a McCay Award who later become Department Head or are appointed to an honorary professorship may continue to hold the Award for the balance of its term.

McCay Award winners will be selected as follows:

First, a list of candidates will be chosen by the Mathematics Faculty. The Department Head will circulate secret ballots identifying eligible persons to the voting faculty of the Department. Each faculty member may nominate up to three names. The top three vote getters will be candidates; in the event of a tie for the third position, all persons with that number of votes will be candidates.

With the advice of the Executive Committee, the Department Head will appoint a five-member McCay Award Committee, consisting of the Head, three current or former Department members who are not candidates, and a representative from outside the Department who will chair the committee.

If it wishes, the McCay Award Committee may name additional candidates from outside its own membership.

Each candidate will prepare a dossier supporting his or her nomination, containing a vita, documentation of excellence in teaching and contributions to service, and a perspective on his or her research summarizing its main directions and impact.

The McCay Award Committee will consider the dossiers and other information it deems appropriate; it may seek outside letters for some or all of the candidates if it wishes. It will provide a ranked list of two or more nominees to the Dean, together with an explanation of the ranking, and supporting documentation. The Dean will then choose the recipient.

The initial faculty vote will be taken by January 15 of the year the Award is to be made. Completed dossiers must be provided to the McCay Committee by March 1 of that year, and the Committee will submit its ranked list to the Dean by June 1.
