Meeting Quora and Required Majorities
Mathematics Department, University of Georgia
Quorum:
In general, a quorum consists of a simple majority of the faculty
(Bylaws, Sec. 3).
Exceptions: A quorum is 2/3 of those eligible to vote for:
- Promotion and Tenure decisions
- Post-Tenure Review
Majority:
In general, a majority of votes cast (including explicit "abstain"
votes) is sufficient to approve a motion.
Exceptions:
- A majority of eligible voters must vote "Yes" in order
to recommend promotion or tenure.
- A majority of eligible voters must vote "Unsatisfactory"
in order to find an individual's performance unsatisfactory in
a post-tenure review.
- In a Department Head appointment, a list of nominees is brought
to the Department faculty, votes are taken, and the list of nominees
receiving majority approval is forwarded to the Dean (along with
the vote totals).
