David
DeLorme
Position:
Member of Technical Staff
Employer:
Lucent Technologies, Bell
Laboratories
Job description:
I work primarily in software
development, deployment, and field support on telecommunications equipment.
Specifically, I work on "intelligent network" equipment- for services
like 800 calls.
Job satisfaction:
It is interesting and it
can be fun. I've found that I get kinda restless if I stay in development
too long, so I do customer support whenever I can and it's lots of
fun. So far, it's taken me to England several times and to a 6 month
assignment in Rome. It was very stressful debugging problems with
highly emotional Italians, but it was very rewarding. I made lots
of friends and learned to speak Italian.
Employment history:
I've been with this company
since I started with a student internship at an AT&T field office
my last year at UGA and then I continued co-oping after I went to
grad school at Georgia Tech. When I graduated with my master's degree,
I transfered to Bell Labs in Columbus and I've been here every since.
Suggestions for students:
My suggestion to students
looking for jobs is to be active in student activities. When I was
interviewing at AT&T, the interviewer did most of her writing when
I was describing my activities as chapter president of ACM. I am positive
that that made the difference in getting the internship which has
not stopped leading to good things.
Advisor/Student relationship:
Personally, I wouldn't
have changed too much in my education. I think the pure math undergrad
degree prepared me very well for the master's program at Ga Tech.
Sure, I had to take a few prerequisite computer classes, but conceptually,
the pure math coursework was more difficult and more enjoyable.
Miscellaneous comments:
I'm happy to give your
students whatever advice I can - as long as I'm not legally bound
by it. :-)
