Job description:

Director of custom application development for the Turner Entertainment Group. Manage group of project managers, business analysts, developers, quality assurance analysts, and support personnel in analysis, design, development, implementation and production support of custom application software supporting the domestic Turner entertainment networks (TBS, TCM, TNT, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and Turner South).

Salary range:

$95,000 - $125,000

Employment history:

I began work as a business analyst with EDS in 1992. I went through EDS' systems engineering development program and worked with clients in both manufacturing and government. In 1997, I went to work with Turner Broadcasting as a business analyst. Since joining Turner, I have worked as a business analyst, then project manager, then manager, and now director.

Suggestions for students:

A mathematics major provides an excellent background for many different career paths, including teaching, research, and the business world (including "start up" companies and more traditional companies). Many employers, including myself, look for people with a mathematics background for their problem solving skills, their background in logic and rational thinking, and their ability to communicate well. Networking is very important in seeking jobs. Be sure to learn all you can about a company as part of the interview process.
