Greg
Harrell
Position:
Mathematics Instructor
Employer:
Valdosta State University
Job description:
I teach mostly 100 level
courses including algebra, precalculus, trigonometry, and business
calculus. My job involves teaching, research, and service. My main
interests include teaching mathematics through applications with the
use of technology. I am planning on getting my PhD in Mathematics
Education within the next couple of years. I would highly recommend
that anyone interested in teaching at the collegiate level get their
PhD.
Job satisfaction:
I am very satisfied with
my job. It is a great environment to work in. Helping students learn
is very rewarding. On the downside? I don't like grading, and the
committee work can get to be very, very time consuming.
Employment history:
Prior to obtaining my M.A.
in mathematics, I worked as a systems analyst in the computer field
for five years.
Suggestions for students:
My main suggestion would
be to tailor your job interview for the company or college that you
are interviewing with. Understand their "mission". For example, if
you are asked to give a presentation as part of the interview process
for a college, find out first whether the department is strong in
research or emphasizes teaching over research. For a research-oriented
institution, your dissertation may provide some excellent material.
For a teaching-oriented institution, you may want to make a presentation
that demonstrates your teaching methods. I know this seems self-evident,
but it's amazing how many people do not do this.
