Employer:
Northrop Grumman
Job description:
Currently employed as a senior anlayst providing technical support
on missile defense contracts for the Department of Defence. In this
posiiton I have been involved in areas such as radar modeling, discrimination
algorithm creation, kill assessment algorithm generation, Bayesian
classification algorithm modeling, Kalman filtering, as well as research
and development.
Salary range:
>$100,000
Job satisfaction:
Over the past 15 years the missile defence industry has provided me
with an incredible arena to learn state of the art statistical and
stochastic modeling techniques.
Employment history:
1990 - 1994 Sparta, Inc. Huntsville, Al. Analyst / scientist. Supported
research and development, testing, and deployment of the Theater High
Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system
1994 - 1998 Nichols Research Corporation, Huntsville, Al. Analyst
/ scientist. Supported research and development of the National Missile
Defense (NMD) missile defense system.
1998 - present XonTech / Northrop Grumman, Huntsville, Al. Senior
Analyst / scientist. Supporting the research and development, testing,
and deployment of the Ground based Missile Defense (GMD) system.
Suggestions for students:
Most employers in the missile defense industry
are happy to hire a talented applied mathematician. A person entering
this field should seek out small inovative companies with support
contracts under large contractors. THese small companies provide
ideal one on one learning environments.
Suggestions for improvement:
The field of statistical analysis is constantly changing. A curriculum
that introduces a wide variety of analystic approaches would be
very beneficial for an entry level analyst. For example, Bayesian,
Nueral nets, Riemmannian Geometric manifolds, and least squares
derivative approaches are common in the missile defence industry.
