Sandra Loyal
Position:
Consultant
Employer:
Towers Perrin
Job description:
Consultant for an employee benefits consulting firm. Career path
for this position is actuarial science background, which includes
a professional study course heavily weighted initially to math &
statistics (risk analysis) and in later exams to insurance structures,
benefit structures, financial market and analysis issues.
Salary Range:
$90,000-$115,000
Job satisfaction:
Great learning environment, high energy, very smart people to work
with, focus on math/statistics applications to real business issues,
personal learning around benefit issues is cool. Bad points: Very
stressful [short deadlines, lots of multiple issues to juggle (technical
approaches vs. real work practical issues, people/behavior analysis
related to changes in benefit designs over time, etc.]. Grueling professional
exam requirements are a real bad point, with average travel time of
8 years for full professional designation. Required study for 1 exam
sitting approximately 400 hours, with 3/4 of time from personal life.
Financial payoff is good, but may not be strong enough from view of
time invested in career. Overall, I like what I do, but I don't know
if I'd do it again from the start!
Employment history:
Towers Perrin (1994 to present)
William M. Mercer, Inc. (1989 to 1994)
Small accounting firm (1987 to 1989)
National Security Agency (1986 to 1987)
Suggestions for students:
Alumn contacts are best, or get info. on professional organizations
for contacts within professional (usually can get membership list
or some point of contact). Use HR department after get lay of land
from an individual.
Suggestions for improvement:
I'm too far removed in time to comment! In general, however, I've
never heard much activity from UGA until recent times, so alumn
contacts, etc. are valuable resource not well tapped.
