Lauren Murphy
Position:
Registered Account Administrator
Employer:
Wachovia Securities
Job description:
I work on a financial planning team. Right now I am in charge of a
marketing campaign that we started a few months ago and involves about
8000 households. Besides that, my job involves a LOT of customer service.
I take orders from people, give quotes, process account transfers,
help people open different types of account, etc.
Job satisfaction:
I think that the only reason that I have enjoyed my job is the fact
that I work with a wonderful group of people. I have learned a lot
from them and really enjoyed working as a team. However, the thing
about working for a investment brokerage firm BRANCH is that...if
you want to move up, then you will have to become a Financial Advisor.
Other than that, there is really nowhere to go. However, if you are
interested in market analysis, ,creating portfoilios, etc., then working
at the headquarters of this type of firm would be interesting. I,
however, have realized now that this is not the industry that I want
to be in.
Employment history:
Working at Wachovia Securities
has been my first job out of college (besides working in Yosemite
National Park for fun)
Suggestions for students:
Interviews are REALLY important, and pretty intimidating if you have
never really had to have one. Practice interviewing! Also, if you
are not completely sure what you want to do, go to career fairs. That
helped me. You will find that lots of companies would love to hire
a Math major.
Internships:
Wachovia Securities has
MANY branches throughout the country. It depends on the branch, but
many do hire interns. Where I live right now, we are not hiring interns.
But, if interested, I suggest that you call local investment firm
branches and see who is.
