Kimberly Nether

Position:

Mathematical Statistician

Employer:

US Census Bureau

Job description:

Analyzing data captured during the Decennial Census and other surveys conducted. Writing programs to analyze data. Writing reports to summarize results.

Salary range:

$41,000

Job satisfaction:

I really enjoy my job. There are so many ways to advance in my career. There are also so many different divisions to choose from so one has endless opportunities to try her hand at different things.

Employment history:

Employment history: I worked at SunCom as a Wireless Sales Specialist for a few months after I graduated. I then moved on to working at the Census Bureau.

Suggestions for students:

Don't give up! I was very discouraged as graduation was vastly approaching and I didn't have a job yet. If you are religious, be prayerful. Also, be persistant in your search. I wouldn't let a day go by that I wasn't on Monster.com, checking DawgTrak or just searching company websites.

Interships:

The Census Bureau does offer summer internships. Check the website at www.census.gov.

Miscellaneous comments:

Suggestions for improvement: Teachers and advisors could be more aware of scholarships, internships and opportunities that students can take advantage of. For minorities, I encourage researching INROADS, Inc. It is a good resource for getting into corporate America and getting an internship.
