William
Young
Position:
Senior Developer/Analyst
Employer:
Emory University
Job description:
I'm building a metadata exchange and library services layer for peer-to-peer
networks.
Job satisfaction:
The programmer's life is pretty good, and this job I like more than
others I have had. I spend most of my time working on fun, chewy problems.
Employment history:
I intermingled work and school (and, as a consequence, took 7 years
to graduate). I had been working as a sysadmin or programmer for over
five years before I graduated.
Suggestions for students:
Find an intership and a mentor. Learn to sell yourself in an interview.
And learn to code, but don't think CS classes are the only (or best)
way to learn.
Suggestions for improvement:
I wish I could have
done a special project for one of my upper division classes.
Miscellaneous comments:
I learned to think.
That was the most important of all.
