Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Graduate Teaching Assistantships usually require either three classroom hours of teaching per week, or an appropriate amount of grading, during each of the Fall and Spring semesters.  The stipend for the 2007-2008 academic year ranged between $13,856-$14,780 depending upon the seniority and academic degree held by the instructor.  In addition, Teaching Assistants pay a nominal amount of $25 each semester for tuition. All students have to pay $561 per semester to cover the use of the health center, sports facilities, campus transportation, and student activities.  Teaching duties may involve teaching a section of a lower level undergraduate course.  Teaching duties are assigned with the expectation that the graduate teaching assistant will be a successful teacher.  New graduate teaching assistants are assigned faculty mentors to help them develop their teaching skills.  There is also a course which new graduate students can take to learn more about teaching.  Each year, several graduate teaching assistants are recognized by the University for their excellent teaching skills.  Several graduate teaching assistants in our department have been honored with this award.  Additional awards our graduate students have received are the B.J. Ball Scholarship Award and the William Armor Wills Memorial Scholarship Award.

Student on assistantships are required to register for a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester.
