CONGRATULATIONS TO STUDENTS AND ALUMNI

Victoria (Tori) Akin and Jacob Rooney were awarded midterm Foundation Fellowships.

This is a prestigious two-year academic scholarship for the two final years of undergraduate study. They include a stipend, travel-study grants, research and conference grants, and a variety of academic enrichment opportunities. Tori has been doing research with epidemiologist and biostatistician Andreas Handel and Jacob has been working with Jason Cantarella’s VRG on knot theory.

Tori Akin and Jung Woong Kim were chosen as joint winners of the Strahan Outstanding Junior Mathematics Major Award. They were recognized for excelling in challenging academic programs.

Colonel Roger Hunter, B.S. 1978, is now the mission manager for the Kepler Mission at NASA’s Ames Research Center. The Kepler Mission is NASA’s probe into deep space to search for habitable planets. To date, they have confirmed 15 such planets out of 1,235 potential candidates. Hunter visited UGA’s campus last October to discuss his work.

Betsy Katz was announced a winner of the George J. Mitchell Scholarship in December 2010. Betsy, a 2009 Honors graduate with triple bachelor’s degrees in mathematics, Spanish and religion, is one of twelve national recipients of this award. This is a one-year post graduate scholarship covering studies at an institute in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Congratulations, Betsy!
