Jim
Anderson
Position:
Lecturer
Employer:
University of Southampton, England
Job description:
I am currently a lecturer of mathematics, roughly the equivalent to
an assistant professor. My job includes teaching several courses a
year, various administrative tasks, and research, much like a university
professor in the US.
Job satisfaction:
I very much like my job; my only complaint is that the salary scale
in England is lower than it is in the US. On the other hand, my teaching
load is lighter than it would be in the US (approximately 2.5 courses
per year), so I have lots of time to do research. The department here
is very social, and there are lots of people who do interesting things
and like to talk about them.
Employment history:
After finishing graduate school in the summer of 1991, I spent one
year at MSRI in Berkeley as a postdoctoral fellow, and then three
years at Rice University in Houston, TX, as an Instructor. Then, I
came to Southampton. During that time, I also had an NSF-NATO postdoctoral
fellowship, which I used to visit the University of Warwick during
the summers of 1993 and 1994.
Suggestions for students:
I have never looked for a job outside academia, so I don't have anything
useful to say there; however, my wife is currently working in industry,
having gotten both her undergraduate degree and a master's degree
in applied math, and finds that the breadth and variety of the math
she learned to be very useful, both in looking for a job and in doing
the job she got.
Miscellaneous comments:
I think that my undergraduate education prepared me exceptionally
well for the career I find myself in, and I would like to say thanks
to everyone who was a part of it.
