Assistantship Information

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Graduate Teaching Assistantships usually require either three classroom hours of teaching per week, or an appropriate amount of grading, during each of the Fall and Spring semesters.  The stipend for the 2001-2002 academic year ranged between $12,220-$13,028 depending upon the seniority and academic degree held by the instructor.  In addition, Teaching Assistants pay a nominal amount of $25 each semester for tuition. All students have to pay $393 per semester to cover health insurance and the use of sports facilities, campus transportation, and student activities.  Teaching duties may involve teaching a section of a lower level undergraduate course.  Teaching duties are assigned with the expectation that the graduate teaching assistant will be a successful teacher.  New graduate teaching assistants are assigned faculty mentors to help them develop their teaching skills.  There is also a course which new graduate students can take to learn more about teaching.  Each year, several graduate teaching assistants are recognized by the University for their excellent teaching skills.  Several graduate teaching assistants in our department have been honored with this award.

Student on assistantships are required to register for a minimum of 9, and a maximum of 12, credit hours each semester.

VIGRE Fellowships

The University of Georgia Mathematics Department is one of only 33 mathematics departments to have been awarded VIGRE grants by the National Science Foundation. The goal of VIGRE -Vertical Integration of Research and Education in the Mathematical Sciences - is to develop innovative research  programs in which undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty work together.

VIGRE fellowships, which are available for US citizens and permanent residents, provide support for up to three years of the five-year PhD program. The VIGRE stipend is $21,000 per year, including summer. Students with VIGRE fellowships pay only $25 per semester in tuition.  All applicants who are US citizens and permanent residents will be automatically considered for these fellowships when they apply for admission.
