What, where, when

Every year in October, UGA Department of Mathematics and Math Club hold an annual High School Varsity Math Tournament on the UGA campus, to foster the mathematical education in Georgia and neighboring states. The tournament consists of three challenging rounds: ciphering, written and team collaboration.

2008 Tournament

The 2008 tournament will be held on Saturday, November 8.

2007 Tournament

The 2007 tournament was held on Saturday, October 13, 2007 in the new Student Learning Center building. About 330 students from Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina participated.

Some pictures from the tournaments: 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004.

Format

  1. The ciphering round consists of 10 problems. 10 points are awarded for each correct answer given in two minutes.
  2. The written test consists of 25 multiple-choice problems of increasing difficulty, from relatively easy to very hard. 10 points are be awarded for each correct answer, 2 point for each question left unanswered, and 0 points for each incorrect answer.
  3. The final round is a team collaboration; a total of 210 points.

Prizes

Two individual winners will be awarded a $1000 Charter Scholarship to attend UGA (subject to acceptance at UGA), for each of four years. The top five winners will get cash prizes, $100, $80, $60, $40 and $20 respectively. The top 10 winners will be awarded cast puzzles by Japanese puzzle maker Nob Yoshigahara. There will be also small prizes for other high-scoring individuals and best teams.
