Algebraic Geometry
2:30p.m., Room 410
Speaker: Joe Fu, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Operations on unitary valuations
Abstract: We describe some operations, defined by S. Alesker, on the space of convex valuations on a finite-dimensional real vector space. Their existence follows from his Irreducibility Theorem for convex valuations, but in concrete terms they remain mysterious. I will discuss some questions and results about them in the restricted case of valuations on C^n invariant under the unitary group U(n).

FRIDAY, April 8, 2005

Geometry
2:30p.m., Room 326
Speaker: Jason Parsley, University of Georgia
Title of talk:
Calculating the writhe of a knot
Abstract:
The writhe of a knot measures how much the curve wraps and coils
around itself. We discuss Calugareanu's formula "Link = Twist + Writhe"
with a demonstration. The majority of the talk will follow a 1995 paper by
Aldinger, Klapper, and Tabor which calculates and estimates writhe through
a variety of approaches. Most of this talk should be well-suited for
graduate students.

Joint Analysis
3:30p.m., Room 303
Speaker: Ken Johnson, University of Georgia
Title of talk: G-equivariant differential operators on homogeneous vector bundles
Abstract: Suppose \,$G$\, is a noncompact real semisimple Lie group with parabolic subgroup \,$P$\,
having Levi decomposition $P=Z_PN_P$. Let $V_i\,\,\,(i=1,2)$ be finite dimensional vector spaces over $\mathbf C$. Fix
$$\pi_i:Z_P\rightarrow GL(V_i)\,\,\, (i=1, 2)$$ two irreducible representations. Extend $\pi_i$ to $P$ by setting $\pi_i(N_P)=I$. Consider the vector bundles $G\times_{\pi_i}V_i \,\,(i=1,2)$.\, over $G/P$. Using results of Bernstein, Gelfand, Gelfand on Verma modules, we characterize all $G$-equivariant differential operators $D$ where $$D:\Gamma^\infty(G\times_{\pi_1}V_1) \rightarrow\Gamma^\infty(G\times_{\pi_2}V_2).$$

This is joint work with Adam Koranyi.
