Seminar Schedule
April 12 - April 16, 2004

All Seminars are held in Boyd Graduate Studies Bldg. unless otherwise noted.

MONDAY, April 12, 2004

VIGRE - Algebra
2:30p.m., Room 410
Organizer: Daniel Nakano, University of Georgia
Activity: We will look at computing support varieties for Weyl modules for E_7 and E_8 at the primes 2 and 3. This was completed for E_6 in last week's session.

Topology
2:30p.m., Room 322
Speaker:
David Galewski, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Spines of 3-manifolds, continued

Cantrell Lecture Refreshments
3:30p.m., Physics Bldg., lobby

Cantrell Lecture Series
4:00p.m., Physics Bldg., Room 202
Speaker: Vaughan Jones, University of California, Berkeley
Title of talk:
Knots and polynomials
Abstract:
We will describe certain invariants of knots in three dimensional space and give an impressionistic view of how they relate to physics, algebra and analysis. The notion of subfactor will be introduced.

Lie Theory
3:30p.m., Room 303
No Meeting this week

Stochastic Processes
3:30p.m., Room 410
No Meeting this week

TUESDAY, April 13, 2004

VIGRE Graduate Student Seminar
2:00p.m., Room 304
Speaker:
Tawanda Gwena, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Nonrationality of cubic threefolds and matroids
Abstract: An outline of the proof of the nonrationality of cubic threefolds via degenerations of cubic threefolds (using the new
techniques devised by Alexeev and others) is given. Matroids (interesting in their own right) will be introduced and used. of
course, I will also explain what rationality or nonrationality mean and what cubic threefolds and degenerations are.

Special Seminar in Analysis
2:00-4:00p.m., Ga Tech, Rm. 255
No Meeting this week

Wavelet Analysis
2:00p.m., Room 326
Speaker: Kyunglim Nam, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Bivariate box splines for image edge detection

Cantrell Lecture Refreshments
3:30p.m., Boyd, Room 409

Cantrell Lecture Series
4:00p.m., Boyd, Room 328
Speaker: Vaughan Jones, University of California, Berkeley
Title of talk: The analytic and algebraic flavours of subfactors
Abstract: Subfactors are algebras of operators on Hilbert space so their properties rely on results from analysis. On the other hand they have field-like properties that make it desirable to treat them like Galois theory. The analysis and the algebra go hand in hand.

WEDNESDAY, April 14, 2004

Berkovich Spaces Seminar
11:00a.m., Room 410
Organizers: Matthew Baker and Robert Rumely

Algebra
2:30p.m., Room 410

Title of talk:
Motivic Integration with Computations (continued)

Cantrell Lecture Refreshments
3:30p.m., Boyd, Room 409

Cantrell Lecture Series
4:00p.m., Boyd, Room 328
Speaker: Vaughan Jones, University of California, Berkeley
Title of talk:
Subfactors and Physics
Abstract: The state space of the quantum world is defined by a Hilbert space. Observables are operators on that Hilbert space. Thus it is not surprising that subfactors occur in quantum physics. We will present a few instances of this, including a speculative use of the Connes tensor product for combining two quantum sytems.

Numerical Analysis
