MONDAY, April 21, 2008
VIGRE – Algebraic Geometry
2:15pm, Room 222
Topology
2:30 pm, Room 303
Speaker: Aja Johnson, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Computational Homology on Sensor Networks
Abstract: Given numerous sensors gathering only local data and communicating a limited amount of information among themselves, how can this data be integrated to describe the area the sensor are covering? We will define two types of simplicial complexes; one that answers this question, but is hard to compute and another that is easy to compute but does not always accurately answer our question. We will show when this second complex is sufficient to guarantee coverage.
Algebra – note change in room
2:30pm, Room 304
Speaker: Irfan Bagci, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Cohomology and Varieties for W(n)
Abstract: W(n) is a simple finite dimensional Cartan type Lie superalgebra defined over the complex numbers. In this talk I will review basic properties of Lie superalgebras and W(n). Later in the talk I will present new results on cohomoloy and support varieties for W(n). This talk represents joint work with Jonathan Kujawa and Daniel Nakano.

VIGRE - Graduate Student Seminar
2:00pm, Room 304
Speaker: Sybilla Beckmann, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Math courses for prospective elementary and middle grades teachers
Abstract: We will discuss key features of the math courses for prospective elementary and middle grades teachers that are taught here and why more mathematicians (especially new mathematicians) should become interested in the preparation of teachers and in educational issues generally.
Mathematical Physics
3:30pm, Room 303
Speaker: David Edwards, University of Georgia
Title of talk: Mechanics, kinetic theory, statistical mechanics, and thermodynamics - their relations or lack thereof
WEDNESDAY, April 23 2008
Algebraic Geometry
2:30pm, Room 410
Speaker: Karl Schwede (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor)
Title of talk: Log canonical and Du Bois singularities
Abstract: The following is joint work with S\'andor Kov\'acs and Karen Smith. In this talk I will describe a simple new Kempf-like characterization of Du Bois singularities in the normal Cohen-Macaulay case and explain how it can be used to show that Cohen-Macaulay (semi)log canonical singularities are Du Bois, a conjecture of Koll\'ar. As a corollary, we obtain generalizations to Kodaira-type vanishing theorems.

Title of talk: Constant Mean Curvature Gluing II
Abstract: I'll continue a discussion of gluing constructions for constant mean curvature surfaces, focusing on the linear analysis. I will also recap the discussion from last week so that everyone can follow the discussion.
