Title of talk: Freyd's generating hypothesis and modules over Tate cohomology.
Abstract: This joint work with Sunil Chebolu and Jan Minac. Freyd's generating hypothesis says that if an object generates a category then it ought to "detect" trivial maps in that category. This sounds nice, but it almost never holds. In an attempt to prove that it does not hold for group representations, we developed a conjecture about modules over Tate cohomology which we can prove in some cases. Meanwhile, the discussion led the investigation of the generating hypothesis to take a strange turn. I will try to explain all of this in as elementary terms as possible.
