Constructing the field equations for force and matter in particle physics
Robert Varley |
Abstract: Many aspects of our everyday lives, from our visual perception of the world to our electronic technology, are governed by a grandiose physical theory called QED (quantum electrodnamics). This all-encompassing theory models the interaction of light with matter, or in particle language the interaction of photons and electrons. Most of the models in fundamental particle physics are derived from the mathematical equations for a system of classical fields. I will describe how these systems of equations are constructed and what they look like. You will see how very complicated Lagrangians and field equations can be constructed quite naturally from some mathematical building blocks and guage theory.
