Mathematical Challenges of Data Assimilation in the Climate and Ocean
Abstract: The need to assimilate data into large (computational) models is driving the development of this important and interesting mathematical area. The challenges and prospects of making Data Assimilation (DA) work well in climate models will be discussed. For various reasons, pressure for the implementation of DA in ocean studies is greater than for other components of climate models and new ideas that have emerged out of dynamical systems for assimilating Lagrangian-type data will be explained as well as the issues this work exposes for DA in general.
Refreshments preceding the talk at 3:00pm.
