OBJECTIVE:

The primary goal of this course is for you to understand and know how to work with the derivative.  You should know how to take the derivative of a polynomial, trig functions, exponential/logarithmic functions, and combinations of these.  You should also know how to use the derivative to solve optimization problems, related rates, and sketch curves. You are expected to be able to demonstrate your understanding of the material by solving the problems similar to those covered in class, not just repeating things exactly like the ones on the board.

GRADING:
                     Exams:                      60%
                     Homework :              10%
                      Final           :             30%

HOMEWORK: I will use WeBWorK for assigning and submitting homework online. The website where you can log on to WeBWorK is https://webwork.math.uga.edu/webwork2/Math2200_Bagci/. The  username is XXX in the uga email account XXX@uga.edu,  and the initial password is the 9-digit student ID number 810-XX-XXXX (including the dash -). You can change your password once you log on.

Homework will be due before midnight three class days after it is assigned. Once the due date is passed, you will no longer be able to work on it. Doing homework is the most important component of the course

You are expected to do the homework on your own everyday. Please check WebWork after each class for new homework assignment.

EXAMS:  There will be 4 in-class exams given (equally spaced) throughout the semester.  Each exam is worth 15% of your grade . Questions on the exams will test for understanding of the concepts and ability to do the applications. The questions will be similar to the homework problems as well as concepts we discuss in class. No make-up exams

Tentative exam dates:   Exam 1 – 12th September

                                        Exam 2 – 15th October

                                        Exam 3 – 12th November

                                        Exam 4 – 5th  December

FINAL EXAM : The final exam is comprehensive and is worth 30% of your grade. It will be roughly twice as long as one in-class exams. It is scheduled for December 12, 2007 from 12 pm to 3 pm. It will most likely be in our regular classroom, but any changes will be announced in class. Also, I will replace your lowest exam grade with your final exam grade if the final is higher than your lowest exam score.

No calculators will be allowed during any of the exams.

Learning Disabilities: Please speak to me privately if this pertains to you.  Make sure you supply the necessary paperwork from the Learning Disabilities Center.
