Text: Precalculus, UGA Edition by David Cohen
Course Web Site: http://www.math.uga.edu/1113/1113home.htm
Tests: There will be 6 tests. The first will be during the last week of August and the first homework will be due at midnight the night before the test. It is your responsibility to sign up for a test time sometime during the week before the test. I will try to keep you informed as to exactly when testing sign-up opens. Once the WebCT for this course is up (hopefully by the end of drop-add), be sure to check regularly for such updates.
Final Exam: Sign up for a time during finals week. See WebCT for more information as finals week approaches.
Attendance Policy: Attendance is generally necessary for success in this course. Official departmental policy states that after 5 absences (excused or unexcused), a student may be withdrawn automatically from the course and assigned an appropriate grade of either W or WF.
Grading Policy: Tests: 10% each for a total of 60%
Homework: 5%
Final Exam: 25%
In-Class Quizzes: 10%
Grading Scale: A: 92-100
A- :89-91
B+: 87-88
B: 82-86
B-: 79-81
C+: 77-78
C: 72-76
C-: 69-71
D: 60-68
F: 0-59
Notes on Grading:-If your final exam grade is higher than one of your tests, then you may use it to replace your lowest exam grade.
-Your lowest 2 HW grades will be dropped.
-Quizzes will be the only part of the course not graded by JExam. There will be somewhere between 5 and 10 during the semester and your lowest grade will be dropped.
-THE ONLY REASON FOR DISPUTING A GRADE IS IN THE EVENT OF A FACTUAL ERROR.
-Despite the fact that homework only counts for a small fraction of your grade, completing these assignments is extremely important for success in this class.
-Make-up tests will only be offered in extreme circumstances. Remember that the final exam can replace a missed test.
-Late Homework assignments will not be accepted. Remember that the lowest two are dropped.
Material to be Covered: The course will cover the following sections in the book:
2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 3.4, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, 6.7, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, 8.7, 9.1, 9.2, 9.4, 9.5, 10.1
Other Notes: -You may complete homework assignments and
participate in practice exams at any EITS lab or from your personal computer. JExam is available for download at: http://www.math.uga.edu/1113/practice_tests.htm
-If you have a new computer with Windows Vista, JExam will NOT WORK on this computer. You MUST complete homework at an EITS lab. There are many such labs around campus; to find a convenient one go to: http://www.eits.uga.edu/sites/
-If
you have technical difficulties installing JExam on your computer, then contact
Dr. Sam Bennett at sbennett@math.uga.edu
-Tests can only be completed from an authorized ISP address (READ: the computers in the testing labs at Boyd GSRC, Rooms 308 and 324).
-JExam is initially cumbersome to use. I recommend that you take the first practice test at least once to familiarize yourself with its anomalies. Actually, I recommend that you take every practice test at least once, since they are part of the homework and test databanks.
-At the end of exams, scratch work will be collected by the exam proctor. This scratch work will be handed back after the exam is released. If you think that you worked a problem completely correctly, but simply mis-entered the solution into JExam, then please submit to me in writing the scratch work and the problem that you wish to be credited for. If you did indeed make simply a typo, then I will be glad to award full credit.
-GRAPHING CALCULATORS MAY NOT BE USED IN CLASS OR ON EXAMS. You may use a TI-30 and only a TI-30. There will also be a calculator built into the computer, so bringing your own calculator does not guarantee an advantage.
-If you feel lost in the first few weeks of class, THERE IS HOPE! Intensive sections of the course exist, and the sooner you move, the more benefits you will have. You should transfer before the 1st test. See the attached handout for information on these classes.
-This syllabus is guaranteed to become out of date. Once the semester gets rolling, check out WebCT for the latest information on the class.
-Honesty Policy: All students must comply with the honor code. Please take a moment to view it at: http://www.uga.edu/honesty/ahpd/culture_honesty.htm
