The objective of this course is for the
students to learn about derivatives and their applications. We plan to cover
the following sections:
2.1--2.4, 3.1--3.9, 4.1--4.7,
5.1--5.2, 8.3. That is, Limits
and Continuity, Differentiation, Mean Value Theorem for Derivatives;
Application of Differentiation; Anti-derivatives.
We will introduce the concept of limit and use it to calculate derivatives of basic functions, then learn techniques ("differential calculus") for calculating derivatives of complicated functions. As applications we will use derivatives to explain and calculate rates of change of various quantities. We will also learn how to find maxima and minima of functions, and use that in applications.
Corequisite Course: Math 2200L. A student who is withdrawn from Math 2200L should also withdraw from the Math 2200. If you have previously completed 2200L with a passing grade then you are exempt from the lab this semester. In Math 2200L, you will learn the use of a particular type of computer software called “maple” to solve calculus problems. Please note that Math 2200 and Math 2200L are separate and independent courses, independently taught and graded, even though they are clearly related and coordinated.
Withdrawals should be done electronically. Withdrawing after the midpoint will result in receiving a WF, if a student does not show a documented health or family emergency that has been approved by Student Affairs.
Grading Policy: There will be homework assignments and quizzes, 3 midterm exams and final exam.

You are encouraged to work with others on your homework, but you must write up your solutions yourself.
Make up exam will not be given unless it is due to family emergency or serious health problem which can be documented and presented to the instructor. There will not be make-up for the quizzes.
Attendance: Five (or more) unexcused absences will result in lowering one’s grade by one letter. Absence can be excused by showing the instructor a documentation or discussing with the instructor in advance. A student with ten or more (excused or unexcused) absences will be withdrawn from the class at any time of the semester.
Test dates and tentative schedule will be announced
later.
Calculator Policy: During the exams or quizzes, allowed are the calculators with simple functions only such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—especially the ones with graphing and differentiating capabilities are NOT allowed.
