MATH 2200L (Call #:40-684): 11:15 ~ 12:05 Fridays, Boyd # 220

Course Objectives: This course aims to introduce you to performing mathematics computations

with Maple. The other major goal of this course is to teach you how to write papers explaining

mathematical computations, in a manner that is clear and concise.

Co requisite Course: MATH 2200.

A student who is withdrawn from Math2200L should withdraw from the co requisite course. This

process is NOT done automatically, so a student should apply electronically for the process through

the OASIS. (Midpoint Withdrawal Deadline: Mar.8, Tuesday)

Materials and Information: The lab manual is available for free at the following website.

                                    http://www.math.uga.edu/calclab/calclab2200

  • Open Lab at the Boyd Graduate Studies Research Center,

1.      Room #308: 10AM-2PM, Mon-Fri.

2.      Room #221: 6PM-10PM, Mon-Thurs.

Projects and Schedule: The primary activity of this course is doing the following 7 projects.

Week 1 - 2: Welcome to Maple 1 (Due Jan.28)

Week 3: Welcome to Maple 2 (Due Feb.4)

Week 4 - 5: Introduction to Limits (Due Feb.18)

Week 6: Definition of the Derivative (Due Feb.25)

Week 7 - 9: Tangent Lines (Due Mar.25)

Week 10 -12: Newton’s Method (Due Apr.15)

Week 13-15: Analysis of a Graph (Due Apr.29)

Grade:

  • NO QUIZ AND NO FINAL.

  • 70% : 7 Projects including H/W assignments.

                     - 10 points are possible for each submission. 2 points will be taken off if late.

                     -  If you do not turn in one assignment, your grade will be lowered by one letter.

Please, participate in the class activity!

  • 30% : Participation

  • The following table is only applicable for students who meet the attendance standard.

Letter Grade

              Condition

           A

more than 75 %

           B

between 60 - 75%

           C

between 45 – 60%

       W or WF

lower than 45% or

regardless of their average if 5absences or more.

Attendance Policy: A student with 5 excused or unexcused absences will be withdrawn from the lab at any time of the semester. Three unexcused absences or more will result in lowering one’s course grade by one letter; e.g., if a student misses three labs and gets A on projects, then it will be lowered to B. At most two make ups are allowed, and a makeup form is available form the instructor.

The Academic Honesty Statement: The student’s signature and a copy of the Academic

Honesty Statement should be included at the very end of each report. Students are

encouraged to work with other students; however, the reports should NOT be identical. That

is, students are supposed to use their own words to explain their works. If this statement or

signature is missing, then the report will not be graded and will be returned to the student.
