CALCULUS FOR BIO-/LIFE-SCIENTISTS

Office Hours: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays 3:30pm – 4:30pm.

Lectures: Mondays 2:30-3:20pm; Tuesdays, Thursdays 2:00-3:15pm.

 

TEXT: Modeling the Dynamics of Life: Calculus for Life Scientists (2 ed) by Adler.

SYLLABUS:  Sections 1.5 - 1.7, 1.9 - 1.11; 2.1 - 1.10; 3.1 - 3.9; 4.1 - 4.4; Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. [Some of these sections may not be covered and some additional sections may be covered, (depending on the progress of the class).

 

Midpoint Withdrawal Deadline: Monday, October 9.

Breaks: Labor Day, Sept 4; Fall Break Oct 26-27; Thanksgiving Nov 22-24.

 

Tests: Exams: There will be four 75mts exams scheduled for (1) Thursday, Sept 7;

(2) Thursday, Sept 28; (3) Thursday, Oct 26; (4) Tuesday, Nov 21. (40% of total weight.)

            Midterm Exam:  Friday, October 6. (15% of total weight)

            Quizzes: 20mts quizzes on Mondays Aug 28, Sept 18, Oct 16, Nov 6. (20% of total weight.)

            Pop-quizzes: (10% of total weight).

            Final Exam: Tuesday, December 12, 3:30-6:30pm. (15% of total weight.)

INSTRUCTIONS: I encourage class participation. Feel free to stop me and ask pertinent questions if you do not understand any part of the lecture. If you are willing to work hard, I will be happy to help you. Work regularly. Make full use of my office hours. I really want you to earn good grades.

I do not curve exams and do not give any make up exam. If you missed any test, your grade for that test will be zero.

            You are expected to attend all lectures; absenteeism is discouraged. Silence your cell phones soon after entering the classroom. No food and/or drinks in the classroom. (No chewing gums either). Do not disturb your classmates during lectures.
