Course description.
This class is an introduction to mathematical modeling based on the use of elementary functions to describe and explore real-world phenomena. Emphasis will be on applications of elementary mathematics together with the ability to construct and to analyze mathematical models, and to communicate quantitative concepts effectively.

Course materials.
Elementary Mathematical Modeling, Functions and Graphs by Mary Ellen Davis & C. Henry Edwards.
Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator TI-83 or TI-82. TI-85 or 86 may be used but it is not recommended. Do not use a TI-81 for this course.
Pack of 3" by 5" index cards for in-class quizzes.

Course outline.
The course is divided into 4 components:
Chapter 1: Linear functions and models
Chapter 2: Quadratic functions and models
Chapter 3 and Section 4.1: Natural growth models and exponential models
Chapter 8: Optimization

Grading policy.
Homework problems will be assigned daily and are due by the next class meeting. They may not be collected, but are useful for the frequent quizzes. Grades will be based on a student’s performance in quizzes (15%), four in-class exam (60%) and final (25%). The grading scale is A: 90%-100%; B: 80%-89%; C: 70%-79%; D: 60%-69%; F: 0 -59%.

Attendance policy.
Any student accumulating more than 5 unexcused absences may be withdrawn. No makeup quizzes or tests will be given; thus any absence on a quiz or test day will result in a quiz/test grade of 0, unless excused. Except for emergencies, it is your responsibility to let me know in advance if you will be absent.

Additional information.
