Hours:
Text: Precalculus by David Cohen, 2nd Edition.
Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to study
functions and their properties and graphs. Specifically highlighted are linear,
quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.
Web Site: Access the MAT 1113
Department web site at http://www.math.uga.edu/1113/1113home.htm
for up-to-date course information and the testing schedule. Note that we are in
testing group 2. Please print the syllabus (test information) document found on
this site.
Grading: Test 1: 5%
Tests 2 - 7: 60% (10% each)
Quizzes and
homework: 15%
Comprehensive
final: 20%
The lowest
score on tests 2 - 7 will be replaced by the final exam score (if the final
exam score is higher). Tests 3 - 7 will
each contain two questions from previously tested material. See the MAT 1113
Current Announcements posted on the 1113 home page before each test for the
review topics.
Note that 90 100 = A, 80 89 = B,
70 79 = C, 60 69 = D, below 60 = F.
Attendance: Mandatory! You are allowed only six absences
throughout the semester. After the sixth absence, I have the option to withdraw
you from the course with either a W or a WF (WF after midpoint). The only
exceptions I will make will be in emergency situations. The Office of Student
Affairs must document all such emergencies before I will allow any relaxation
of the attendance policy. Bottom line:
to do well in the course, dont miss class! However, if you decide you
wish to make a personal withdrawal from the course, please complete the process
yourself, and notify me of your decision.
Miscellaneous: As a rule, I do not give make-up
quizzes and exams. Quizzes will be announced, so there is no reason one should arbitrarily
miss on quiz days. Keeping up with your in-class grades makes a significant
positive impact on your overall grade in the course.
Academic Dishonesty Policy:
All students are responsible for maintaining the highest standards of honesty
and integrity in every phase of
their academic careers. The penalties for academic dishonesty are severe, and
ignorance is not an acceptable defense. Please read the Culture of Honesty
disclosure found at http://www.uga.edu/ovpi/academic_honesty/culture_honesty.htm.
Additional Info: This section and several others of Math 1113 will be
tested during this semester on the new testing system developed by the
departments of Chemistry and Mathematics (as was done in prior semesters). The only
difference between these new sections and the regular sections are the testing
system and the need for a graphing calculator. In particular the textbook (Precalculus
by David Cohen) and the syllabus are the same. Students must fill out and sign
an academic honesty statement before taking the first test.
Rather
than using a tutorial disk, you will have access to practice tests by
downloading the JExam software. There is a link at http://www.math.uga.edu/%7Ejohn/new1113/practice_tests.htm
to download the software. You will only need to download it once. The first
practice test covers the topics to be covered on Test 1.
The
first test (January 16th) will cover functional notation and
function evaluation. The test will have 5 questions, with 75 minutes to
complete (as on tests 2 7). The primary purpose of the first test is to
familiarize you with the system, and the questions will be relatively easy.
You
will have to sign up (on-line) for a session to take the tests at http://exams.uga.edu/~jmartin/login.html.
The sessions start promptly at the time stated. If you show up late, you will lose the time missed. When logging in
to register for a test, you will be prompted for three pieces of information:
your MyID, your password, and your SSN. Your
MyID must be entered in lower case letters. You must have a photo ID when
coming to take each test. Report to room #324 in Boyd (GSRC) for all tests.
