This course is designed to
prepare you for the study of calculus.
It also covers mathematical skills needed in business, physics,
chemistry, landscape architecture classes.
It requires a working knowledge of basic algebra and geometry. There will be certain formulas, primarily
geometric formulas that you will be required to learn.
The main focus of this course is the study of
functions. It begins with the definition
of functions, how to determine the domain and range of functions, and the
graphs of basic functions. It then
covers specific functions and applications involving these functions. They are linear functions, quadratic
functions, polynomial functions, exponential and logarithmic functions,
trigonometric functions, and inverse trigonometric functions.
Attendance: Because
this is an intensive Precalculus section with limited enrollment attendance is
mandatory. Students who have missed more
than five classes will be withdrawn from the course with a WF. This has the same affect on your grade point
average as an F. Students who find that
they need to withdraw from the course may do so with a W as long as they
initiate the process before March 5. You
should check with your advisor on the consequences of withdrawing from a course
before you withdraw. Student initiated withdrawal is done through OASIS.

Final Grade for course =
0.05*(Test One) + 0.10*(Test Two + Test Three + Test Four +Test Five + Test Six
+ Test Seven) + 0.15 (In class grade) + 0.20 Final Exam. If the final exam score is higher than the
lowest test score from Test Two through Test Seven it will replace that lowest
test score.
Test: Test
One through Seven and the Final Exam are given on computers in one of the mathematic
department’s computer lab room 328 Boyd.
Before each test you should register for a time to take the test from
your JEXAM. Please arrive for each test
a few minutes early.
You
will be asked to sign an academic honesty policy statement before you take your
first test. You will need to bring a photo ID and pencils to every test. Paper will be provided. You cannot use a calculator on tests one, two
and seven. You will need to bring your
own calculator for the remaining tests.
Sections
of Precalculus are divided into two testing groups. You are in group two and will take your test
on the second day of each test schedule. See the web-ct calendar as well as the MATH
1113 homepage syllabus for these dates.
You
may view your graded test on JEXAM. You
should check each test carefully. Any
questions you have about a test should be brought to my attention within one
week after you took the test. Please do this by emailing me through the
web-ct program the questions you want me to examine.
