Required Text:
Edwards & Penney, Calculus with Analytic Geometry, 6ed. "Early
Transcendentals Version", Prentice Hall 2003
Course Format
Calculus is one of the greatest creations of science. Ever since
Newton and Leibniz introduced the subject in the 1600s, Calculus
has been studied and applied successfully to a broad spectrum of
real world problems. The objective of this course is to study the
theory of the derivative and its applications. In order to prosper
in this course, you will need a working knowledge of major topics
of MATH 1113, not just memorization of equations and techniques.
This course will cover:
I. Chapter Two - Prelude to Calculus (2 weeks)
II. Chapter Three - The derivative and rules for differentiation
(3 weeks)
III. Chapter Three - Applications of the derivative; derivatives
of transcendental functions (3 weeks)
IV. Chapter Four - Mean Value Theorem and applications (2 weeks)
V. Chapter Four - Curve Sketching (1 ½ weeks)
VI. Sections 5.2 and 8.3 - Anti-derivatives (1 ½ weeks)
Grade Distribution and Exam Schedule:
3 Exams (Tentatively February 12, March 19, and April 16): 20% each
Homework/Quiz Avg:15%
Final exam (Friday, May 9, 8 -11 AM): 25%
Attendance Policy: I will take attendance everyday day (in
some form). Notice that your attendance is not apart of the grade
distribution above, but your FOURTH UNEXCUSED absence will drop
your final average ONE letter grade. I will autocratically decide
if an absence is excused or unexcused. If you know ahead of time
that you will miss class (e.g. family vacation or doctor's appointment),
please let me know so that I may take that under consideration.
After SIX absences, I reserve the right to drop any student from
this course.
Make-up Policy:
If you are absent and miss a test or quiz, I will allow you to make
it up with an approved excuse through the Student Affairs Office
or University Health Center. NO OTHER EXCUSE WILL BE ACCEPTED. I
do not accept late homework, so if you expect to miss class when
an assignment is due, you must turn it in ahead of time.
Academic Honesty:
I will strictly adhere to the Academic Honesty guidelines given
by the University of Georgia. Academic honesty means performing
all academic work without plagiarism, cheating, lying, tampering,
stealing, receiving unauthorized or illegitimate assistance from
any other person, or using any source of information that is not
common knowledge. Please find the University's policy on Academic
Honesty at:
www.uga.edu/ovpi/academic_honesty/hon_prom.htm
Important Dates:
Add/Drop: January 9-14
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: January 20
Midpoint Withdrawal Deadline: March 7
Spring Break: March 17-24
Classes End: May 1
In conclusion, I hope that we can learn from each other and have
a successful semester. I will assure you that I will be a fair instructor,
and hopefully one that you will enjoy learning from. This is a great
subject, so let's have fun with it!! Good luck :o)
