SYLLABUS: Sections 2.1-2.4, 3.1-3.9, 4.1-4.7, & 5.1-5.2
EXAMS & GRADING: We will have 4 hour exams, on
Friday, Sept. 12, Friday, October 10, Friday, November 7 and Friday, December
5.
On Fridays of weeks without hour exams (excluding the first
week), we will have short quizzes (about 10 minutes) near the end of class.
The quizzes will consist of 1 or 2 homework problems of the past week. We will
also have a comprehensive final.
I will write down your grade on the final 3 times, each of your 4 hour exam
scores once, and your average on the homework quizzes once. From these 8 grades,
I will pick the highest 7 to compute your overall average.
The midterm is Thursday, October 9, and the deadline for obtaining a W is Tuesday, October 14. . After that time, you need a medical or emergency excuse approved by the Dean of Student Affairs to obtain a W.
******* The single most important thing you can do to do well in the course
is to do the homework regularly and to think about it as you are doing it. The
purpose of the quizzes is to encourage you in this. Do not fall behind.
There will probably not be time during class to review every homework problem
you might have a question on. If the class discussion does not resolve all of
your questions, it is your responsibility to seek extra help from me (or others)
outside of class.
I WOULD STRONGLY ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO FIND A STUDY GROUP TO WORK WITH REGULARLY. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN DETERMINING SUCCESS IN CALCULUS.
OTHER POINTS TO BE AWARE OF
There will be no makeups for missed quizzes. However, I will drop the lowest quiz grade.
Calculators will be allowed on homework and quizzes, but NO CALCULATORS will be allowed for hour exams and finals. This will allow everyone in class to be on an equal footing when taking hour exams and finals.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!
