Topics
· The definition of the derivative: calculating it from the
definition, its meanings (slope of the tangent line, velocity, rate
of change)
· Differentiation rules (including facility with the chain
rule)
· Reading, setting up, and solving word problems (extremum
problems and related rates)
· Conceptual skills with graphing - understanding the first
and second derivative
· Some experience with the "theoretical infrastructure"
of calculus - some discussion of any or all of the following: continuity
and the intermediate value theorem, maximum value theorem and mean
value theorem.
Guidelines for grades
A The student has computational mastery of the course, can
set up and solve non-routine word problems, and has an understanding
of the theoretical aspects of the course (e.g., how to apply the
Intermediate Value Theorem or Mean Value Theorem)
B The student has computational expertise but make occasional
errors, can set up and solve standard word problems and can give
an example of a non-differentiable continuous function.
C The student demonstrates basic computational skills, has
some conceptual understanding of the meaning of the derivative,
and can do most of a routine word problem.
D The student can do routine calculations, including a moderate
chain rule application, can find the equation of the tangent line
but struggles to set up a routine word problem.
Grading Tests: Test 1:February 4, Test 2: February 27, Test
3: April 1, Test 4: April 29
Any missed test can be made up only in the case of a documented
emergency. Any
student missing a test must contact the instructor before the next
class meeting.
Quizzes: Given almost every week. The problems for the quizzes
are very similar to homework problems. 25% of the quiz grades will
be dropped at the end of the semester. The average of the remaining
quizzes will count as a 5th test score. No makeup quizzes will be
given.
Homework: Homework will be assigned but not collected or
graded. When possible, we will spend some class time answering homework
questions, but if time does not permit us to answer all questions,
it is the student's responsibility to seek help outside of class.
Final Exam: Cumulative; Wednesday, May 7, 8-11am
Course Grade: Final Exam = 25%, Average of five tests =
75%
Important dates: Midpoint withdrawal date, March 7. Any
withdrawal on or before this date will result in a "W".
Any withdrawal after this date will result in a "WF".
Academic Honesty: All students are expected to adhere to
the highest standards of honesty. In the case of suspected violations,
procedures as outlined by the Academic Honesty Policy of the University
of Georgia will be followed.
Disclaimer: The instructor reserves the right to change
any of the details of this syllabus upon notification to students.
